1 confirmed case of monkeypox traveled from Singapore to Australia, 13 individuals under observation

According to the Ministry of Health, a man traveling to Australia who transited via Singapore on June 2 has tested positive for monkeypox.

In a statement released on Monday, MOH stated that the New South Wales Ministry of Health alerted it of the situation on Saturday.

The individual had left Barcelona on 1 June and landed at Changi Airport on 2 June.

He remained at the Changi Airport transit holding facility till his departure for Sydney on the same day and did not visit any other Changi Airport facilities.

According to MOH, he landed in Sydney on June 3 and tested positive for monkeypox there.

"Because the patient did not enter Singapore or engage with community members, there is presently no considerable danger of community transmission," the ministry stated.

"However, as a precaution, we have done contact tracing for the two impacted flights and individuals who may have had touch with the passenger in the airport transit area," the statement continued.

MOH stated that since there were no evaluated close contacts, there was no need for quarantine.

"However, we have placed 13 individuals who may have had casual contact with the traveler under 21-day phone surveillance," the statement continued.

"Persons under phone surveillance will get daily phone calls till the conclusion of the monitoring period to determine their health state. If they describe symptoms consistent with monkeypox infection, they will be evaluated medically and may be sent to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases for further evaluation.
