10-20¢ increase for all metal cans and plastic bottles

To promote recycling, the National Environment Agency (NEA) plans to launch a new container return scheme by mid-2024.

When the program is implemented, a small deposit of 10 to 20 cents will be imposed to all metal and plastic drinking containers for prepackaged beverages.

Prior to that, it is conducting a public survey to gauge public opinion.

Beginning in the middle of the year 2024, a 10 to 20 cent flat deposit will be applied to the retail price of each beverage sold in a plastic bottle or metal can.

When the program is implemented, you should expect to spend between S$1.10 and S$1.20 for a beverage that normally costs S$1 per can.

This applies to all beverage kinds and all sizes of metal and plastic containers, including beer, milk, and soft drinks.

The deposit will subsequently be returned when the container is returned to specified return points.

According to NEA, these return stations would often be positioned in retail establishments and public areas.

There, users may either use a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) or collect cash from a cashier.

Options for refunds may include electronic transmission, cash or cash vouchers, and charitable contributions.
