On the morning of July 23 at the Singapore Expo convention center, a three-hour town hall meeting was organized to advocate for the retention of Section 377A of the Penal Code and the protection of marriage.
According to the event's organizers, Jason Wong and Mohammed Khair, over 1,200 individuals attended "Protect Singapore Townhall - Safeguarding Our Future."
The crowd was primarily consisting of middle-aged Singaporeans, along with a few previous members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Both Wong and Khair alleged in their Facebook posts:
"Our event was oversubscribed, with hundreds on the waitlist despite attempts to cancel it – Eventbrite pulled our listing just 5 days before without letting us appeal."
They also highlighted:
"We’ve been relatively restrained in the face of an intolerant, vocal minority that seeks to overturn the order in all areas of society – be it marriage, education, businesses, or beliefs, while demonising all those who disagree as “bigots” or “haters,” instead of engaging us with good faith. We will be silent no more."
In addition, they urged the government not to remove Section 377A unless "sufficient protections" are in place to protect marriage, families, and "freedom of conscience," including the constitutional definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.
