On Monday, the House observed a minute of silence in tribute of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 96.
MPs and British High Commissioner to Singapore Kara Owen, who was in the public gallery, bowed their heads.
In a speech, House Leader Indranee Rajah acknowledged the "reciprocal connection of warmth and affection" that existed between the Queen and Singapore, and described her passing as the end of an era.
She stated that Queen Elizabeth had a unique role in the history of Singapore.
Until the 1960s, Singapore was under the symbolic sovereignty of the British monarchy, even during its transition from a crown colony to an independent state.
The Queen issued a congratulations note to the maiden session of the Legislative Assembly, the predecessor to the present Parliament, following the historic general election of 1955.
In a message delivered to the House on April 22, 1955, the Queen stated, "At the opening of the first session of the Legislative Assembly under the new Constitution of Singapore, I am pleased to express to my people in Singapore my great satisfaction at the significant advance in their constitutional progress that this occasion marks."
"The Council of Ministers will now have to deal with the myriad difficulties of government, and will bear the lion's share of responsibility for Singapore's sustained progress and prosperity, as well as its residents' welfare and safety."
Parliaments throughout the world observed a moment of silence to honor the Queen, who passed away peacefully at her Scottish estate Balmoral on Thursday afternoon, following a 70-year reign.
She was not only the leader of the United Kingdom, but also of the Commonwealth, a collection of 56 countries that includes Singapore.
In a broadcast from Cape Town on her 21st birthday in 1947, she vowed to devote her life, "whether long or short," to the service of the Commonwealth.
Ms. Indranee stated, referencing this, "Throughout her extraordinary life, the Queen exemplified responsibility, stability, intelligence, and elegance. She always exemplified responsibility and devotion before self throughout the decades."
"Her life was truly long, and she more than fulfilled her pledge - quietly, steadily, and with humility - in devotion to her nation and the Commonwealth."
Ms. Indranee stated that beyond duty and public service, the Queen was adored for her personal touch and the warmth, honesty, and graciousness she demonstrated towards people of all walks of life.
She said, "She was attractive, humorous, and disarming, with an innate capacity to quickly put someone at ease."
Several Parliamentarians, including Ms. Indranee and Workers' Party MP He Ting Ru, have met with her (Sengkang GRC).
Last Monday, Ms. He wrote on Facebook about her visit with the Queen in 1989, during which she gave her with a bouquet of flowers.
Singapore hosted three state visits by the Queen, in 1972, 1989, and 2006.
During these travels, she had always made an effort to get to know ordinary Singaporeans better, visiting Mr. Thomas Pang and his family in 1972 and 2006 at their Toa Payoh Housing Board apartment.
Ms. Indranee stated that while the Queen has received several presents from throughout the world, at least a handful from Singapore appear to have been meaningful to her.
They include a gold-plated Singapore-made Rollei film camera that she was pictured using throughout the years, as well as a gold-and-diamond Peranakan brooch that she reportedly wore more than 20 times, most recently in May during the opening of the Elizabeth train line in London.
Ms. Indranee stated that the Queen's link with Singapore is still evident across the city, such as in the naming of streets, estates, and schools.
Ms. Indranee said that these include Queen Elizabeth Walk in Marina Bay, the Queenstown estate, and Princess Elizabeth Primary School, which "document elements of our past and demonstrate our continuous respect for Her Majesty and our enduring good connections with the United Kingdom."
"Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's demise signals the end of an era. On behalf of this chamber, I send our heartfelt sympathies to His Majesty King Charles III, the royal family, and the people of the United Kingdom on the demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II "She stated,
