Are sexually active gay men the problem? 10th case of monkeypox confirmed in Singapore

Singapore confirms the 10th case of monkeypox in Singapore.

This raises the overall number of illnesses in the country since June to 10 as of Tuesday, July 26.

All 10 cases are men.

The patient is a male Taiwanese of 28 years of age, according to an update on the Ministry of Health's website.

He currently resides in Singapore after just returning from Canada.

On Tuesday, he tested positive for monkeypox, four days after developing fever, headache, anal region discomfort, and muscular soreness on July 22, which proceeded to a rash in the perianal region — the region of the body around the anus.

The individual sought medical attention on Tuesday and was hospitalized the same day to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

The man's infection is unrelated to any of the previous cases of monkeypox.

Background

MOH also stated previously that it has been working with healthcare providers and community partners to engage people who are more at risk.

This group consists of guys who engage in sexual activity with men who have just had sex with new partners.

Within three weeks of their return from monkeypox-affected regions, travelers who develop symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, and rash should seek medical attention immediately.

Since May, over 14,000 cases of monkeypox have been documented in over 70 countries and territories throughout the world.

The World Health Organization labeled monkeypox a global health emergency, which is the agency's most urgent call to action.

In 2020, WHO assigned the same designation to Covid-19.
