The next wave of Covid-19 cases might appear in Singapore in July or August, as people's antibodies from vaccinations and infections from the last Omicron wave begin to decrease.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung stated on Sunday (5 June) that based on what is occurring in other regions of the world, such as the United States and Europe, the virus will be driven by the sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5.

Mr. Ong stated this during a visit to the future Bukit Canberra integrated sport and community hub. "It is not due to a complicated modeling effort, but more to the reality that whenever a wave subsides, four to six months later we should anticipate another wave to emerge."

"Nothing will occur until months later, when our antibodies begin to decrease; then, in July or August, BA.4 and BA.5 will emerge," according to our estimation.

The two sub-variants were identified for the first time in South Africa at the beginning of this year and are presently causing a global surge in Covid-19 populations.

Mid-May saw the detection of the first three instances of the sub-variants in Singapore, but specialists believe there is no need for worry.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) previously stated that the two variants contain mutations in the spike protein that appear to confer "greater immune escape properties and higher transmissibility" compared to the BA.1 and BA.2 variants, which were responsible for the initial outbreak of Omicron here.
