At the 2018 Asian Games, Singapore took home 4 golds, 4 silvers, and 14 bronzes.
At the 2022/3 Asian Games, Singapore has a total of 3 golds, 6 silver, 6 bronzes.
Overall, the results seem to have dipped, but don't despair. There are three reasons to explain the disparity.
1. Pencak Silat is no more
The host country of the Asian Games gets to choose up to 7 sports. In the 2018 games hosted by Indonesia, Pencak Silat was included. Singapore had a fruitful haul of 2 silvers, 3 bronzes. But this year China chose Wushu and Chinese Chess. Singapore managed 1 silver, 1 bronze from Wushu, but no medals from Chinese Chess.
2. Rough waters
In 2018, Singapore's swim team was in good condition. Joseph Schooling alone took 2 golds in the 50m and 100m butterfly events, and also helped clinch bronze in the men's 4x100m and 4x200m freeestyle relay teams. He did not make it to the Asian Games in 2023, being edged out by better swimmers. Singapore swimmer Jonathan Tan is also yet to reach his peak (regarded as roughly 24 years of age). He is 21 years old currently.
In 2023, Singapore has one medal from swimming, a silver in the Men's 50m butterfly secured by Teong Tzen Wei.
3. The Best is Yet To Be?
The Hangzhou Asian Games are ending on 8 October. There are still a few more chances to add to the medal tally. All the best to Singapore for the final weekend!
