Kampong Gelam is a flourishing neighborhood that has significant historical roots as Singapore's Muslim district.
Therefore, it is essential to respect the religious and cultural sensibilities of the community.
A Turkish restaurant near Sultan Mosque has recently courted controversy by having a belly dancer outside the business.
One individual afterwards complained about the restaurant on Facebook for what he saw to be its contempt for the Muslim community. This elicited mixed responses.
The Derwish Turkish Restaurant clarified that disrespecting the mosque or the Muslim community was not their intention.
In a Facebook post published on Saturday, December 24th, the man stated that the Turkish restaurant on Bussorah Street had organized a belly dance show in front of their establishment.
The eatery is in close proximity to the Sultan Mosque.
He said that the dancer's "revealing clothing" left her "nearly nude."
In photographs, the dancer looked to be wearing a bra, belt, and skirt typical of a Turkish belly dancing outfit.
The guy stated that such an act lacked respect for the Muslim community and the mosque.
He further stated in the comments section that the eatery was owned by a non-Muslim Singaporean.
