Bomb threat an example of harm over drug use: Shanmugam

A man who reportedly made a false bomb threat on a Singapore Airlines (SIA) aircraft from San Francisco is only one example of the harmful effects of drug usage, said Minister of Law and Home Affairs K Shanmugam on Thursday (29 September).

The 37-year-old man was detained on Wednesday morning (28 September) after alleging there was a bomb in a carry-on bag on aircraft SQ33 and attacking a member of the cabin crew. He was suspected of being under the influence of illegal substances.

Shanmugam, who in recent weeks has given interviews to international media about the death sentence in Singapore for drug trafficking, made the remarks on Thursday at a conference hosted by the Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association (Sana), according to reports from local media.

He also mentioned Gabriel Lien Goh, 25, who in 2019 killed his mother and grandparents while under the influence of the psychedelic chemical lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). The High Court issued an indefinite detention order against him last week.

"There are no candlelight vigils held by campaigners for either the grandma or mother. Their lives also matter" Shanmugam stated, as reported by The Straits Times.

He also mentioned the recent experience of Thailand, where cannabis usage and cultivation were legalized for recreational purposes in June. He noted that cannabis use has resulted in a number of kids hallucinating and injuring themselves.

Shanmugam reports that a three-year-old child had to be hospitalized after eating a cookie containing the drug.

Shanmugam stated that Singapore's drug regulations are based on science and common sense, citing a paper from the Institute of Mental Health that discussed studies on the severe health risks associated with cannabis usage.
