British TikTok "Gus Venner" @gv7111 shared a viral video of himself on the East-West Line (EWL) proselytising for Christianity. Within the video, he explained how Christianity is the better religion to other commuters who mostly ignored him. His TikTok account presents him as a staunch Christian who goes around the world to proselytise, which included New York and Rome.

Local netters were horrified that he took the opportunity to preach on the EWL, with several of them tagging the Singapore Police Force to draw this video to their attention. Some of the netters also tried to caution him that preaching in public spaces is illegal.

Who is "Gus Venner"?

His TikTok profile has only 2.5k followers, with the recent video in Singapore being his only video with more than 10K views. His usual videos usually get less than 1K views. Despite fervent attempts to spread the Lord's word, it seems like his attempts are very much unwelcome in both the physical and cyber space.

Can you preach publicly in Singapore?

In Singapore, Article 15 of the Constitution states that there is freedom of religion, where every person has the right to profess and practice religion. However, it does not authorise any religious acts contrary to any general law relating to public order, which Gus Venner has evidently flouted.

There is no room for proselytizing in Singapore's public spaces, irregardless of the religion or nationality of the individual who attempts to do so. Tourists who visit Singapore should be mindful that they should obey the local laws.
