Cheers to terminate worker following dispute with police

Following a dispute between the employee and the police at Lau Pa Sat on New Year's Day, FairPrice has instructed its Cheers franchisee to terminate its employee.

A FairPrice spokesman stated in an updated statement that Cheers promptly placed the employee on administrative leave and launched an investigation after being made aware of the incident.

"We have since spoken with the staff and assessed the incident and have instructed our franchisee to dismiss the staff," the spokesperson said on Wednesday.

"All staff, regardless of whether they are employed by franchisees, are required to comply with the authorities. We do not tolerate acts from staff who seek to undermine the authority of the police."

"Confederateginger" published five videos of the incident, which occurred in the convenience store about 8 p.m., on the social networking app TikTok.

The recordings showed the user, identified on his profile as Jonathan, recording his conversation with three police officers.

In the first video, the user could be heard notifying the police that a "drunk guy" had caused trouble by entering the establishment while intoxicated. In addition, he said that the individual used vulgar language and posed as a police officer.

A police officer was heard requesting identification from the TikTok user. Jonathan declined and questioned the officers why he was required to produce identification.

In another video, the user can be heard questioning a police officer about "loss of income" resulting from the closing of the Cheers store. According to the police, the business was not closed.

Prior to the police's arrival, racial and nationalist slurs and verbal threats were reportedly made, the police said on Tuesday, citing early investigations.

Two individuals, ages 29 and 64, are assisting police officers with ongoing investigations. There were no injuries reported.

FairPrice apologized for "the public concern this incident has caused" in an earlier statement.
