Cigarettes will cost $1.50 more

After Singapore announced a 15% rise in excise duty on all tobacco products on February 14, the day the 2023 Budget was released, the retail price of cigarettes increased by more than 10% overnight.

According to the Ministry of Finance, a 20-stick pack of Marlboro cigarettes will now be sold for S$15.50, up from S$14 before.

Some merchants were forced to use improvised signage to alert customers about the abrupt price hike.

To discourage cigarette use, the excise duty on all tobacco products has been increased.

Singapore imposes an excise tax on all manufactured and imported items.

The increase is anticipated to produce around S$100 million in additional annual revenue.
