Death penalty for 2 Singaporeans in M'sia



On August 9, 2022, a Singaporean man found with more than 10 kg of narcotics in Malaysia faces the death penalty.


49-year-old Loh Kok Kiong was detained alongside his 32-year-old Malaysian lover, Soh Yong Xin. The pair was accused with narcotics trafficking in Johor, Malaysia, on Thursday, August 18. If convicted, both risk the death sentence or life imprisonment.


Loh faces a total of six accusations, while Soh faces two.


The pair was apprehended with narcotics at 11:15 a.m. on August 9 at a Forest City apartment.


They were detained for allegedly trafficking 9.625kg of methamphetamine (meth).


They were also discovered with 666 grams of ketamine at the time.


According to Bernama, the pair is charged with one crime of trafficking in hazardous narcotics and one count of importing or exporting particular dangerous medicines.


Loh faces four additional counts separately.


Bernama said that Loh was charged with trafficking 1.505kg of methamphetamine and 139g of nimetazepam from a residence on Jalan Sutra Kuning in Taman Sutera.


Additionally, Loh is accused with drug usage.


On the day of his arrest, he reportedly injected amphetamine into his body while at the Iskandar Puteri District Police Headquarters Narcotics Division, according to Bernama.


Loh was charged with a fourth offense after police discovered 100g of ketamine in his vehicle on August 9.


Loh and Soh were apprehended with 11 kilograms of methamphetamine, 766 grams of ketamine, and 139 grams of nimetazepam.


Bernama reported on August 9 that the pair was not represented by attorneys in court.


Bernama said that they pled not guilty to possession of ketamine and Loh pled not guilty to usage of methamphetamine.


According to ST, no plea was recorded for the additional counts during the hearing on August 9.


According to Malaysian law, drug trafficking is punishable by death or life imprisonment with at least 15 lashes of the cane if convicted.


Those convicted of importing or exporting narcotics may face a maximum punishment of RM100,000 (S$31,000), a maximum prison sentence of five years, or both.


A Malaysian court refused to grant bail. According to ST, the next court appearance is planned for September 20, 2022 before the Malaysian High Court.
