On April 14, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced that the "4G" group of ministers had elected Finance Minister Lawrence Wong as the group's new leader.
Former Transport Minister and People's Action Party (PAP) Chairman Khaw Boon Wan "facilitated a consultative process" that revealed widespread support for Wong among ministers.
In the afternoon of April 14, Khaw informed the ministers, who acknowledged this as their joint decision. Following that, the selection was presented to and supported by Government Members of Parliament during a party caucus.
PM Lee concluded:
"This is a critical choice for Singapore. It will assure the continuity and stability of leadership, which are the system's defining characteristics.
The right to lead does not pass down through generations. Each generation of leaders must earn it anew. Singapore will always require a strong leadership team, led by a leader capable of uniting others and drawing out the best in each team member. I am certain that Lawrence and his team will continue to do all possible to benefit Singapore and Singaporeans."
