On Tuesday, May 17, a 61-year-old man will be charged for multiple incidents in which he reportedly made racist and insensitive remarks regarding religion.
Additionally, he will be charged with possession of obscene videos, according to a statement issued by the police on Monday evening.
He was not mentioned in the police report.
On June 5, 2012, he reportedly made racial statements to a 26-year-old male in the neighborhood of Angullia Park, according to the police.
He is also said to have made insensitive comments about religion during a presentation at Ngee Ann Polytechnic on July 28, 2017, and to have responded insensitively to questions about religion on an internet forum between August 10, 2020 and September 13, the same year.
He faces a total of four charges.
If convicted of uttering words with the aim to offend a person's racial feelings, he risks up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
If found guilty of committing an act harmful to the maintenance of religious peace, he risks up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
If convicted of having obscene videos, he may be sentenced to up to a year in jail, a $40,000 fine, or both.
The police stated that they take actions that have the potential to undermine racial peace in Singapore seriously.
"Any person who makes remarks or acts in a manner which causes ill will and hostility between the different races or religious groups in Singapore will be dealt with swiftly and in accordance with the law," they added.
