Fostering inclusive and diverse workplaces in Singapore

In addition to establishing legislation against workplace discrimination, the Singapore government aims to encourage more firms, particularly those in the public sector, to promote inclusive workplaces and fairer employment practices, according to Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

He spoke during a panel discussion at the Singapore Perspectives 2023 conference hosted by the Institute of Policy Examines (IPS), a Singapore-based think tank that studies and produces ideas for public policy.

Wong noted, in response to the topic of whether sexual orientation and gender identity are protected categories under anti-discrimination legislation, that "sex and gender are different."

“It will cover sex, it will cover race, religion, age. We’ve stated very clearly what the areas of coverage are for the anti-discrimination act,” he said, adding that this would be debated in parliament when the bill is tabled, reported The Straits Times.

Wong also emphasized the government's continued use of law in Singapore's attempts to adopt more inclusive workplace regulations. "And we will continue to examine how we can persuade more companies to adhere not just to the letter of the law, but also to its spirit, in order to promote more inclusive workplace practices and fairer employment practices across the board," he said.
