Gigene Wong of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) said on Wednesday (July 27) that she has resigned as a member and head of the party's headquarters in order to care for her dementia-stricken father.
Amy Khor of the People's Action Party fought the Hong Kah North Single-Member Constituency in the 2020 General Election against Ms. Wong. Dr. Khor received 60.98% of the vote.
Ms. Wong remarked that the choice to retire was a difficult one.
"My father suffers from dementia, and I intend to care for him. In addition, I am enrolled in a continuing education course," she said on Facebook.
"Nonetheless, I aim to assist more individuals in various ways. As long as we have a genuine love for the nation and the people, it makes no difference where we are or which party we belong to "She underlined her appreciation for the people's support.
Francis Yuen, the general secretary of the PSP, stated that the party understood her circumstances and reluctantly accepted her departure.
"Caring for her father should be a top concern," he continued.
Prior to entering politics, Ms. Wong spent twenty years working and living in China for global corporations.
She earlier stated that she had heeded Tan Cheng Bock's appeal to return to Singapore and pursue politics.
Kumaran Pillai of the PSP resigned as communications head and party spokesperson earlier this year, citing health issues resulting from a frozen shoulder he received in 2020.
In October of last year, party treasurer Kayla Low left due to new employment responsibilities requiring extensive business travel, while previous election candidate Brad Bowyer resigned due to outrage over his remarks comparing vaccination-differentiated policies to the Holocaust.
