Is PSP getting whiter?

Updated: Mar 1

Secretary General Leong Mun Wai and Hazel Poa posing for a PSP event

Leong Mun Wai has stepped down as Progress Singapore Party's (PSP) Secretary-General after he was POFMA-ed for his social media post on an old couple's subsidies.

LMW supporters groan that he was removed from the helm position, but could this actually be a good thing for them?

If PSP is willing to replace a secretary-general just for a POFMA, PSP might well be holding themselves to higher standards now. It could be a first important step to improving their reputation in public perception.

It was just a few years ago in 2020-2021 that PSP had some rough times, on the same level as the Tan Chuan-Jin/Cheng Li Hui and Nicole/Leon sagas. They too made some tough decisions and expelled many members.

In March 2020, Jan made a religiously offensive post. He was outed as the admin of the NUS Atheist Society Facebook page, which posted a picture of a Quran and Bible, with caption: "For use during toilet paper shortages". He was expelled from PSP.

Daniel Teo Weilong

In April 2020, Daniel made an 'Anonymous'-style video, alleging that the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) has been "infiltrated by foreign proxies...funded by western liberal sources." He named numerous PSP members as attempting to disrupt the party from "helming the next stage of Singapore".

He named Khush Chopra as the mastermind, and notable members such as Ravi Philemon, Jan Chan, and Wendy Low (current PSP Head of Women's Wing) as part of the conspiracy. He later admitted to Tan Cheng Bock that he had faked the whole thing, although Ravi Philemon resigned at the end of the saga.

Kala Manickam

After GE 2020, seven PSP members filed affidavits against Kala Manickam, alleging she was "uncooperative" and "disruptive" during the election campaign. For example, she did not join the team for morning meetings at coffee shops and walkabouts and also demanded that things be done her way. A petition was then filed by 17 party members and a party volunteer to PSP’s CEC on Aug 26 last year, calling for her removal.

Brad Bowyer

On 10 Aug 2021, he claimed that the unvaccinated were being persecuted, and compared the vaccination push to the Holocaust. The Israeli embassy strongly condemned his post.

Every Political Party Struggles

PAP had to take down a minister for corruption.

WP had to deal with Raeesah Khan's lies.

PSP is dealing with POFMA.

Every party has its struggles. How can they overcome their weaknesses? How do they recover from the fallout? That may be even more important for the long-term future.
