Jail for man who drove an ambulance while drunk




A 27-year-old Singaporean of Indian descent was sentenced to two years in prison for driving an ambulance under the influence of alcohol and causing an accident that wounded his passenger.


G Mohanavarooman Gopal Oyyappan, who was sentenced to jail on Monday, had 183 mg of ethanol per 100 ml of blood, which is more than double the legal limit of 80 mg per 100 ml.


In 2020, shortly after the easing of movement restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he was operating a private ambulance belonging to his employer.


Then, he struck several guardrails in the middle of Seletar Expressway (SLE).


On Monday, following his release from prison, G Mohanavarooman Gopal Oyyappan was additionally fined 4,000 Singaporean dollars and barred from driving all classes of cars for ten years.


He promptly began serving his term, according to a story in the tabloid newspaper TODAY.


In July, G Mohanavarooman Gopal Oyyappan pled guilty to four offenses, including driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving resulting in severe bodily harm, and driving without a valid Class 3 or 3A license.


In addition, he confessed to a further allegation of intentionally inflicting harm.


About six months before the ambulance accident, he struck a customer in Punggol Housing Estate while drinking in a coffee shop.


G Mohanavarooman Gopal Oyyappan may have received up to five years in prison for driving recklessly that resulted in severe injury.


As a serious offender, he could have been sentenced up to a year in prison and fined up to 10,000 Singaporean dollars.
