The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced on Thursday that junior doctors and dentists in the public sector will receive salary increases as of January 1.
In response to media inquiries, a MOH spokesperson stated that the beginning pay of house officers and first-year medical officers will increase by 7 to 13 percent.
In addition, a new weekend allowance will be implemented.
According to the spokesperson, eligible medical officers who have served for up to six years after graduation and dentists who have worked for up to four years after graduation can also anticipate a wage raise depending on their years of service and bond duration.
The Ministry of Health, working with MOH Holdings (MOHH) and the public healthcare clusters, ensures that the pay of doctors and dental officers in the public healthcare system remain competitive by conducting frequent reviews.
The last salary increase for doctors and dentists occurred in 2019.
Indeed reports that the average monthly income for a house officer at MOHH is $4,500, while the average monthly compensation for a medical officer is around $6,200.
A new stipend for weekend rounds at hospitals for all physicians and dentists, ranging from $160 to $275 based on seniority, will be implemented beginning February 1.
The emergency department and night float allowance for all MOHH and public healthcare cluster physicians will also be changed on February 1. Night float refers to doctors who work continuous night shifts without daylight shifts.
A prior review in 2022 resulted in new allowance rates for full and partial calls. Half calls occur when shifts are prolonged by five to six hours, whereas full calls involve doctors working for more than 24 hours.
In 2021 and 2022, following a review of their compensation, the base salary of public healthcare nurses were increased by between 5 and 14 percent in two parts.
