Kei Kaisendon expects their staff to cover the cost for dash-diners?!

ottercitystate

On 11 Jan 2025, a waiter working at Kei Kaisendon (Jewel outlet) had to pay the bill for three errant customers who ate and left without paying. After this news went viral on social media, netizens were extremely indignant at how the wait staff had to bear the cost for the errant consumers during their shift.

On Reddit, one user even suggested the passing of stricter laws to ensure that such incidences can be prevented. Others were dismayed that the wait staff had to foot the bills for these criminals.

Given the huge uproar, Kei Kaisendon published a statement on 23 Jan 2025, clarifying the details surrounding this incident. They claimed that the customers did not intentionally leave without paying. They had to rush off for a flight and forgot to settle the bill, They also reported that the issue has been settled, and they have fully reinbursed the employee.

Although Kei Kaisendon did not reveal the staff's compensation, a quick search on Google had listed a salary of ~$2k for employees in the food and beverage industry. With such a low salary, how can Kei Kaisendon expect their employees to bear the cost of dash-diners? Is this the norm for F&B industry? Furthermore, Kei Kaisendon's clarification did not elaborate on their employee policy on dash-diners.

Kei Kaisendon ironically claimed that they are committed to creating a good working environment for their employees, yet demanded their employees to take responsibility for such mistakes that were not committed by them. Should we be supporting such businesses who are not willing to care for their employees?
