In 2018, a lawyer drove a car negligently, resulting in the death of a motorcyclist due to head and neck injuries.
Laurence Goh Eng Yau was driving in the first lane of the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on September 12 of that year when the cars ahead of him came to a halt owing to traffic congestion.
When he noticed the automobile directly front of him had slowed to a standstill, he moved to the left to avoid colliding and sideswiped Malaysian motorcycle Wong Yew Wai, 33, who was traveling in the second lane.
As a consequence, Mr Wong was forced into the third lane, where he was run over by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the spot.
Goh pled guilty on Monday (April 11) to negligently causing the motorcyclist's death.
The 57-year-old is the sole proprietor of a business called Laurence Goh Eng Yau & Co., according to a search on the Ministry of Law's website.
He was driving a vehicle on the AYE towards Tuas soon before the deadly collision, the court heard.
Goh was traveling at a pace of around 75 to 80 kilometers per hour, despite the fact that the speed limit in that area is 90 kilometers per hour.
At around 5.19pm, he observed the automobile ahead of him had braked and come to a complete stop due to the congestion ahead.
However, Goh's automobile was too close to the rear of this other vehicle.
Goh then rapidly drove to the left and into the second lane in order to avoid colliding with oncoming traffic, without looking carefully to verify there was no approaching traffic close.
Mr Wong's motorcycle was sideswiped and wound up in the path of a moving lorry.
Mr Wong was run over by the lorry driver, who was unable to stop in time.
