A heated discussion between Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam and Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) Leong Mun Wai in Parliament resulted in Mr. Leong retracting a bribery charge against Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M).
He also extended an apology to Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin.
Mr. Shanmugam stated on Wednesday that the next actions are being discussed in response to Mr. Leong's violation of parliamentary processes and norms.
Mr. Shanmugam stated in a government statement that Mr. Leong had acted in a "very unparliamentary and unacceptable" manner by publishing a Facebook post containing inappropriate and false remarks following Monday's parliamentary discussion.
In a previous debate, Mr. Shanmugam had responded to a question posed by Mr. Leong regarding why the Ministry of Home Affairs had named and disclosed that Mr. Lee Hsien Yang and his wife, Mrs. Lee Suet Fern, were being investigated, whereas police had not named the six former management staff of Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) who were being investigated for corruption.
Mr. Shanmugam stated on Wednesday that Mr. Leong had the opportunity to pose more questions in Parliament following his response. Instead, the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) NCMP subsequently published an accusatory Facebook post.
They included the allegation that the Law Minister was trying to "muddy the waters" by bringing up the case of former domestic worker Parti Liyani, in which police announced that they were investigating her employer's son Karl Liew for giving false testimony.
Mr. Shanmugam stated that the Facebook post placed doubt on him and Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean.
Mr. Shanmugam stated that Mr. Leong's claims that Keppel O&M employees were "really guilty" were similarly baseless and requested that Mr. Leong delete his Facebook post, retract his claims, and provide an apology.
