Lim Tuang Liang the first Government Chief Sustainability Officer from Jan 1

Friday, December 30th, the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) announced that the position of Government Chief Sustainability Officer (GCSO) will be formed to lead the Government's sustainability initiatives.

The ministry stated, "It charts ambitious and concrete targets over the next ten years, strengthening Singapore's commitments under the UN's 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement, and positioning us to achieve our net zero emissions aspirations."

Mr. Lim Tuang Liang will become the first GCSO on January 1, 2023, concurrently with his appointment as MSE's Deputy Secretary (Special Duties).

When his replacement is selected, he would stand down from his current position as Chief Science and Technology Officer (CSTO) at MSE, the ministry noted.

Mr. Lim will lead environmental initiatives, such as the Singapore Green Plan 2030, "to realize a sustainable, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient Singapore," according to MSE.

The plan, which was launched in February 2021, is a "national movement" to push the goal for sustainable development.

It outlines objectives for the next decade to reinforce Singapore's obligations under the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement.

According to MSE, the strategy also positions Singapore to attain its net-zero emission ambitions.

Mr. Lim will be in charge of MSE's Public Sector Sustainability Office (PSSO) and Sustainability Partnerships Office (SPO), where he will collaborate with public sector entities to create and coordinate GreenGov.SG plans.

To achieve the national sustainability goal, he will also lead the Government's partnership stakeholders, including corporations, civil society partners, and people.
