Litterbugs to pick up trash in areas with more visibility

To make the penalty more visible, the National Environment Agency (NEA) will begin holding Corrective Work Order (CWO) sessions in city areas starting in November 2022.

On November 15 and 17, the sessions were held in Tanjong Pagar and Chinatown, respectively.

In order to discourage litterbugs, NEA is also attempting to increase public knowledge of CWO by placing educational standees whenever a session is taking place.

Statistics

The amount of littering citations given year has been declining, from roughly 33,100 in 2017 to about 15,500 in 2021, according to NEA.

From 2017 to 2021, there were 27,200 littering and high-rise littering tickets issued year on average.

About 10,200 CWOs were issued to offenders within the same time period.

According to NEA, neighborhood centers, the vicinity of hawker centers, MRT stations, and retail malls are the places where littering happens the most frequently.

Most offenders are men between the ages of 18 and 35.

Cigarette butts frequently top the list of littered objects, according to ground surveys.

Officers from the NEA will carry out targeted enforcement in high-littering areas and in public gathering places.
