A lorry driver is accused of assisting a man to leave Singapore after he reportedly failed to deliver luxury items to consumers.
Mohamed Alias, 40, was accused on Friday (July 22) with assisting a Singaporean man to flee the country by allowing him to hide in the container compartment of a truck with the Malaysian license plate number JUH 7272.
Friday of last week, the Malaysian driver was also charged with assisting the man's Thai wife to escape Singapore in the same manner.
The 26-year-old Singaporean Pi Jiapeng and the 27-year-old Thai Pansuk Siriwipa are accused of defrauding victims who had paid in advance for expensive watches and handbags.
After at least 180 police reports concerning two firms, Tradenation and Tradeluxury, were filed in June, arrest warrants and Interpol red alerts have been issued against them.
While some media outlets have reported that the total value of the undelivered products is S$32 million, CNA has learned that as of Sunday, the scam victims who filed police reports had not received goods worth at least S$20 million.
The truck driver reportedly drove the vehicle concealing the pair on July 4, at around 7:25 p.m., at the departure cargo sector of Tuas Checkpoint.
This offense is punishable by imprisonment between six months and two years and a fine of up to S$6,000.
The police had earlier reported that Pi was detained on June 27 on suspicion of cheating offenses. His passport was confiscated, and he was freed on bond on June 28, awaiting the outcome of the inquiry.
Pansuk Siriwipia also assisted the police with their investigations and turned up her passport on June 30. Both have since been unreachable.
The police have requested the public's assistance in locating the missing pair.
Interpol reports that Pi was born in Fujian, China, but Pansuk is from Roi Et, a region in central-northeast Thailand. The agency reported that Pansuk is 1.64 meters tall.
