Two Malaysian teenagers were arrested in connection with a viral TikTok video in which they allegedly used "abusive language" while complaining over a secondary school history exam paper that featured questions regarding Singapore.
The Hulu Selangor boys both are 18 years old.
Superintendent Suffian Abdullah, chief of police for the district of Hulu Selangor, said in a statement on Saturday that they were arrested after a teacher submitted a report.
The teacher complained about a viral video that the two had shared online. It depicts them "uttering abusive language because they were supposedly unhappy" with the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) paper.
SPM, or the Malaysian Certificate of Education, is a nationwide examination taken by all Malaysian Form 5 students. It is equal to Singapore's GCE O-level exams.
In the video, one teen can be heard cussing and making an obscene gesture while ridiculing inquiries regarding Singapore's historical significance, claiming that they are irrelevant to Malaysians.
“To those who made this SPM history paper, what about Singapore? People don’t read about Singapore,” he can be heard saying.
“This Singapore! You think I care about Singapore? Even for water, they use Malaysia’s. Suddenly you come up with Singapore.
“And then with nationalism, the Constitution, making me tired reading about it, but it didn’t make it (in the exam).”
The two teens apologized in a later video.
The mobile phone that was allegedly used by the two youngsters has been confiscated, according to Supt. Suffian. "A screening test revealed that both individuals tested negative for drugs and had no criminal history," he continued.
The matter is being investigated in line with Section 14 of the Minor Offenses Act of 1995 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Commission Act of 1998 of Malaysia.
