M'sian father almost cremates wrong body of 'son'

A grieving father from the Malaysian state of Negeri Sembilan was surprised to learn that his son, who officials thought had died in jail the previous week, is still alive.

The father, who wished to be known only as Mr. Chantren, told the Malay newspaper Sinar Harian that the family's agony began on March 3, when he received a phone from the prison officials informing him that his son, whom he did not identify, had died at Sungai Buloh Prison.

He stated that he had no idea why his 19-year-old son was in prison. According to his knowledge, his son was living and working in Selayang, Selangor.

Mr. Chantren was instructed to get his son's remains from the Sungai Buloh Hospital, which he and several other family members performed.

"When we examined (the remains), we discovered that the face had been altered, since there were stitch scars and his hair had been shaved," he informed reporters when they visited his home.

Mr. Chantren and his family prepared for funeral rituals and made preparations to cremate their son's remains upon retrieval of the body from the hospital.

Nevertheless, the family was notified just hours before the cremation that the kid was still alive, much to their amazement.

"Around three or four hours prior to the scheduled cremation, the jail administration notified us that my son was still alive.

"They conducted a video call" (to show). I have no idea how to express my feelings. Our son is still alive, but whose body is currently in our home?" The confused man stated.

According to Mr. Chantren, jail officials have subsequently retrieved the remains from his residence.

Mr. Chantren has also sought a jail visit with his son.
