A man, described by the prosecution as having an insatiable thirst for child pornography, was sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday for downloading over 13,600 files of child abuse footage.
Ansari Abdul Amin, 36, pled guilty to possessing child abuse material after admitting to viewing sexual recordings of babies, girls, and boys less than 11 years old having sex with adults.
From 2016 and 2021, he also exchanged such material by chatting anonymous Telegram users who publicly marketed their collections of child pornography.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Bryan Wong stated that Ansari began viewing pornographic content on Telegram between 2013 and 2014. He either downloaded the photographs and movies to his mobile device or imported them into his Mega account, a cloud-based storage service.
In 2016, he started his account, then in 2017, when its storage limit was surpassed, he created a second account.
Throughout 2014 and 2015, Ansari watched child abuse material for the first time when he downloaded it from Telegram chat groups.
DPP Wong stated that he erased the files after reading them two or three times each week for around 30 minutes per session.
Moreover, he kept copies of this content on his Mega accounts for his personal viewing pleasure.
DPP Wong alleged that Ansari would exchange child abuse-related content with other Telegram users, then wipe his communication records from the service.
Ansari was detained at his employment on October 18, 2021, after receiving information that he had downloaded child abuse material. It was not disclosed in court what he did for a living.
A review of his Mega accounts found that his second account had at least 13,606 electronic files portraying youngsters participating in sexual acts and positions.
DPP Wong requested two to two-and-a-half years in prison for Ansari, stating that the defendant's unquenchable need for such material extended almost five years.
According to him, Ansari was an active participant who fueled the ominous demand for child abuse content.
The prosecutor Wong continued, "He was hardly a'silent' observer."
According to him, the file titles of the content further demonstrate Ansari's utter disregard for the consequences child abuse content has on its victims.
The DPP stated, "Many of these children, some as little as three years old, were exposed to terrible atrocities."
Among the aggravating aspects in this instance, according to him, are the extensive volume of child abuse content and number of films with a profoundly upsetting character.
DPP Wong compared Ansari's case to past instances and remarked that while there was one incident involving almost 46,000 files, the case of Wong Ket Kok, Ansari's case had a unique factor not present in other cases.
This was due to the fact that Ansari exchanged such items and made measures to disguise his behavior.
In mitigation, Ansari pleaded for a reduced sentence by stating, "I did not anticipate things to end out this way."
When questioned by Senior District Judge Bala Reddy what he meant, Ansari responded, "At the moment, I was not thinking about my parents. During that time, I was married but we did not engage in any sexual activity.
The judge interrupted him and stated, "This is child sexual abuse."
Ansari bowed his head and expressed regret for his actions before declaring his divorce.
The enormous number of exploitative material found in Ansari's possession, according to the judge, demonstrates his unrelenting pursuit of such material.
Muhammad Khairy Ariffin, 30, was sentenced to six months and six weeks in prison on Friday for having child pornography, among other offenses.
He had a Twitter account with sexually explicit content and generated 816 pornographic movies for sale. He was discovered with 203 pornographic movies of youngsters created by third parties.
Possessing or getting access to child abuse material is punishable by up to five years in prison, a fine, or caning.
