Man imported 20 replica guns and 54 magazines gets arrested

The police announced on Wednesday that a 42-year-old man was detained for his suspected participation in importing replica firearms and ammunition.

Monday, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) detected irregularities in the scanned photographs of an import container at Tuas Port that revealed a cargo of imitation firearms destined for Singapore.

The unlicensed cargo comprised twenty imitation firearms and fifty-four magazines.

The case was deemed a violation of the Regulation of Imports and Exports Regulation and sent to the police for further investigation.

Officers detained the 42-year-old man on Monday after discovering via follow-up investigations that the cargo was intended for him.

Upon his detention, two imitation firearms were also confiscated, according to the police.

A 61-year-old woman was also reportedly involved in the operation, according to the police, and she is suspected to have previously participated in the importation of similar things.

Two further imitation firearms were recovered from the woman.

Investigations by the police are underway.

Under the Regulation of Imports and Exports Act, replica toy firearms are regulated items.

The maximum fine for first-time offenders is S$100,000 or three times the value of the items for which the violation was committed, whichever is larger. They may potentially face up to two years in jail, or both.

The police stated that replica toy guns may be considered offensive weapons based on the conditions in which they are discovered.

"If the individual carrying the item cannot offer a legitimate explanation for the item, they may additionally be responsible under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act of 1958."
