A migrant worker was sentenced to four months and seven weeks in prison on March 15 for assaulting his roommate with a metal dumbbell rod.
On January 19, 31-year-old Vietnamese national Le Dong Hai pled guilty to the charge of intentionally causing bodily harm.
At around 10:20 p.m., he returned from work and entered the room where the 34-year-old victim was resting.
The court heard that Le asked his roommate where his rice cooker was, but his roommate said that he did not know.
He left the bedroom but returned shortly before asking his roommate where his rice cooker was located. The man stated his ignorance once more.
This infuriated Le, who walked into the living room and retrieved a 29-centimeter-long, 2-kilogram metal dumbbell rod.
He entered the bedroom and swung the rod at his sleeping roommate, whose back was facing Le. He struck his roommate on the head near the left ear.
The victim, who had not seen Le approaching, felt a severe pain and observed that he was bleeding near his left ear. His employer was notified and a police report was lodged.
The victim was sent to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a cut on his left ear, bruises on the left side of his face, and blurred eyesight.
Le was detained on January 20.
Le apologized for his acts before the court through a Vietnamese interpreter and pleaded for leniency.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Quek Lu Yi requested a prison term of between four and seven weeks and five and ten months.
The use of the metal dumbbell rod, which has the potential to cause severe harm or death, was used in her argument for a longer jail term.
Ms. Quek further stated that the victim's blurred vision was transient and cleared after a few days, and that the victim was admitted to the hospital and discharged on the same day.
District Judge Lee Lit Cheng stated during sentencing that the attack was unprovoked and occurred when the victim was lying in a vulnerable position and was taken by surprise.
