According to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's announcement at the National Day Rally on August 21, the government will amend Singapore's Constitution to safeguard the definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
He stated that this amendment will stop the definition from being challenged in court on constitutional grounds.
Additionally, it will aid in the government's "managed and carefully planned method" of repealing Section 377A of the Penal Code.
PM Lee added detail:
"It will limit this change to what I believe most Singaporeans will accept, which is to decriminalise sexual relations between consenting men in private.
But it will also keep what I believe most Singaporeans still want, and that is to retain the basic family structure of marriage between a man and a woman, within which we have and raise our children."
