Mata to have more power in collecting and using DNA for investigations

Updated: Sep 16, 2022

On September 12, Minister of State for Home Affairs Sun Xueling presented the second reading of the Registration of Criminals (Amendment) Bill 2022 in Parliament. She recommended expanding the scope of DNA and identifying information gathering.

DNA information is genetic information obtained through the forensic DNA analysis of a bodily sample, such as blood, buccal swab, or hair. Identifying information refers to data that may be used to identify a person. This includes fingerprints, pictures, and demographic information such as gender and age.

She also recommended three more amendments: expanding the permitted uses of DNA information, enhancing the safeguarding of DNA information, and introducing mechanisms to permit the removal of material from databases.

Sun stated that the purpose of this bill is to improve the police's ability to solve crimes using DNA evidence.
