The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced on Thursday (Apr 27) that two Singaporean families, consisting of 14 Singaporeans and a relative, were safely evacuated from Khartoum, Sudan.
The MFA stated that it had been providing consular assistance to Singaporeans in Sudan and exploring evacuation options since the outbreak of conflict in the country. The families, along with other Malaysians and foreign nationals, were evacuated to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with assistance from the governments of Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The Singapore embassies in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, as well as the Singapore Consulate-General in Jeddah, worked closely with their host governments and the Malaysian embassy to facilitate the evacuation.
The Singaporean government expressed its gratitude to the governments of Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates for their assistance.
Fighting between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has continued despite a US-brokered three-day ceasefire, resulting in at least 512 deaths and 4,193 injuries, according to health ministry figures.
