The Transformative Justice Collective (TJC), an organization dedicated to advocating for the abolition of the death penalty in Singapore, has faced a setback in its recent application to cancel or modify a correction direction issued under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA).
On May 19, 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a POFMA correction direction to TJC. The MHA stated in a press release on May 30 that TJC had posted a false statement of fact on its Facebook page on April 23, specifically concerning the execution of Tangaraju S/O Suppiah.
As per the correction direction, TJC was instructed to place a correction notice at the top of its Facebook post. This notice would explicitly state that the post contained false information and would provide a link to a reliable source, the Factually website, which is operated by the Singapore government and aims to debunk misinformation and disinformation.
Additionally, TJC was required to publish the correction notice as a new post on its Facebook page. However, TJC sought to challenge the correction direction by submitting an application to cancel it. Unfortunately for TJC, the Minister for Communications and Information and Second Minister for Home Affairs rejected their application.
The MHA provided an explanation for the rejection, stating that the conditions necessary for issuing the correction direction had been met, and the application did not present any grounds to refute the direction. As a result, TJC will be obligated to comply with the correction notice and make the necessary amendments to their Facebook post as directed by the POFMA correction direction.
