Minister for Home Affairs and Law, K Shanmugam, addressed the allegations surrounding the rental of 31 Ridout Road, a colonial bungalow, stating that he "has nothing to hide" and dismissing the claims as "outrageous." Speaking to the media during a doorstop outside the People's Action Party (PAP) branch at Block 107 Yishun Ring Road on May 23, 2023, Shanmugam emphasized that he had followed the rules and would cooperate with any government investigation into the matter.
Acknowledging the public's right to raise questions regarding the rental of public properties, Shanmugam explained that he had contacted Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong last week, suggesting an independent review to investigate any potential wrongdoing. He underscored the importance of maintaining integrity within the system and ensuring that doubts about the integrity of ministers are promptly addressed.
Shanmugam expressed confidence in his conduct, as well as that of Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan. He emphasized the necessity of presenting the facts in Parliament and to the public, promising that the questions would be addressed during the parliamentary session in July 2023. He urged the relevant agencies to carry out their investigations and report their findings to the Prime Minister, adding that he would respond accordingly once the review was completed.
While awaiting the outcome of the review, Shanmugam refrained from commenting extensively on the allegations, including claims of illegal tree removal, Singapore Land Authority's involvement in car porch work payments, and allegations of conflict of interest. He described these allegations as outrageous but emphasized the need to await the conclusion of the review conducted by Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean.
In concluding his statement, Shanmugam reiterated his willingness to provide answers to the questions raised, including those regarding the rental arrangement. However, he stressed the importance of following the proper process and refraining from making premature judgments, given the ongoing review.
