A minister stated that Singapore expects to receive additional chicken imports from multiple countries in the coming weeks, allowing the city-state to sustain supplies even after Malaysia halted shipments at the beginning of the month.
"In the coming weeks, we will be expecting additional chilled chicken from Australia and Thailand, as well as frozen chicken from locations such as Brazil and the United States," Desmond Tan, the Minister of Home Affairs, sustainability, and the environment, said in a Facebook post today.
"Rest assured, there is sufficient chicken for everyone provided normal purchasing practices are maintained."
The export prohibition on live chickens by Malaysia is a blow to Singapore, which imports around one-third of its chicken supply from its neighbor.
Malaysia has joined other countries in implementing measures aimed at reducing domestic prices, as nations around the world struggle with rising food prices, in part due to the Ukraine conflict's impact on food supply.
Indonesia recently put a temporary restriction on palm oil exports, India limited wheat and sugar exports, while Serbia and Kazakhstan imposed grain shipment limitations.
"Thanks to the swift reaction of our importers, wholesalers, and supermarkets working with the Singapore Food Agency, Singapore's chicken supply is stable," added Tan.
In the meanwhile, Norlizan Mohd Noor, director-general of the country's veterinary department, told Bernama that a chicken scarcity in Malaysia is expected to be remedied within a month.
According to the article, he stated that the July Aidiladha festival will have enough chicken to fulfill demand.
