MP Sun Xueling calls for respectful feedback, denounces threats and abuse

MP for Punggol West, Sun Xueling, has emphasized the importance of providing feedback in a respectful manner, discouraging the use of threats and verbal abuse. She made these comments in reference to an e-mail sent by a resident on May 28, which contained racist and sexist undertones. MP Sun shared the e-mail, with the sender's personal information redacted, in a Facebook post on Saturday. The e-mail raised three issues: the presence of heavy vehicles in the area, maintenance problems at Block 261B Punggol Way, and concerns about the design of a local road.

The e-mail, which included offensive language, was also sent to Workers' Party MP Jamus Lim, as well as several government agencies and figures, including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

In her Facebook post, MP Sun also included a follow-up e-mail from Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council, sent on June 1 after a contractor was dispatched to address the maintenance complaint. In response, the sender questioned whether the town council's property officer had visited the site and concluded with a remark implying the need for the officer to be replaced.

On her Facebook page, MP Sun expressed her desire for civility in communication when attempting to convey a point. She also outlined the steps taken by the town council upon receiving the complaints.

In an interview with The Straits Times, MP Sun stated that it is her responsibility as an MP to follow up on residents' feedback and work towards resolution in collaboration with government agencies. She highlighted that the e-mail she shared contained derogatory language towards truck drivers, exhibited racist tones, and verbally abused a town council property officer who was simply fulfilling their duties.

While recognizing the various challenges individuals face, MP Sun called for a gracious society where people treat one another with respect. She reminded everyone that front-liners and customer-facing officers are fellow Singaporeans who are dedicated to their jobs.
