Tech mogul Elon Musk has announced his intention to introduce a monthly fee for all users of X, his social media platform previously known as Twitter. Musk revealed this plan during a live-streamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, highlighting it as a strategy to combat the proliferation of automated bots on the platform.
The discussion between Musk and Netanyahu revolved around the increasing influence of artificial intelligence and methods to counteract antisemitism and hate speech on X. Musk disclosed that X presently boasts approximately 550 million monthly users, generating between 100 to 200 million posts daily, with an acknowledgment that some of this content can be problematic.
Addressing the issue of preventing fake accounts from amplifying harmful content, Musk proposed the implementation of a paywall as the primary defense. This subscription-based approach would make it considerably more challenging for bots to create multiple accounts using various credit cards, effectively increasing the cost of deploying bots.
While Musk did not specify the exact monthly fee, he mentioned his intention to establish a "lower tier pricing" option for users in addition to X's existing premium subscription, which currently starts S$11 per month.
Since his acquisition of Twitter in October 2022 for a staggering $44 billion, Musk has introduced several changes that have stirred the platform's user base. These changes include a significant reorganization of the company's operations.
