Police will take no further action against MP Louis Ng under the Public Order Act for holding a sign in support of hawkers more than two years ago, according to a statement released by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) on Thursday (Oct 6).
An AGC spokesperson stated, "Investigations showed that Mr. Ng was fulfilling his responsibilities as a member of parliament by expressing concern and support for the welfare of hawkers in his area during the COVID-19 pandemic."
In addition, police investigations have been concluded, according to the statement.
The AGC further emphasized that Mr. Ng's case differs from that of activist Jolovan Wham, who was tried and convicted for participating in a gathering in a restricted area. In December of 2018, he held a placard reading "Drop the charges against Terry Xu and Daniel De Costa" outside the State Courts.
An AGC spokesperson said: "Mr. Jolovan Wham was charged and convicted for demonstrating in a restricted area (the State Courts entrance). This is a violation of section 15(2) of the POA (Public Order Act). Mr. Wham provided no defense to the Charge. The circumstances surrounding Mr. Jolovan Wham's case differ from those surrounding Mr. Louis Ng's case."
