Oppositions unite! Politicians attend PSP's national day dinner

Missing WP

At the National Day dinner hosted by the Progress Singapore Party (PSP), prominent representatives from various opposition political parties attended.

Paul Tambyah, leader of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), and Lim Tean, chairman of People's Voice, were seated among around 400 guests.

Members of the Reform Party, the Singapore Democratic Alliance, and the National Solidarity Party were also present.

In an interview with Mothership, PSP Secretary General Francis Yuen stated that it was a symbol of the opposition parties' shared wanting to better Singapore.

The meal was hosted at Beng Hiang Restaurant in Jurong East on the same night as the Worker's Party's (WP) national day celebrations; Yuen stated that WP members would have been invited if not for the scheduling conflict.

"Having differing opinions does not imply we lack patriotism. We just want to ensure that there is variety and that everyone is respected, regardless of whether they are from the ruling party or an opposition party."

In his opening remarks, Yuen stated that the party's vision for Singapore — "a more compassionate and caring society" — could only be realized with more opposition participation in parliament, "including our colleagues from alternative parties who are present tonight."

"You never know," Yuen subsequently told Mothership, "there may be places where we can collaborate and achieve a similar objective."

"It is preferable to make more friends than enemies in life," he continued.
