A member of the audience who sang the National Anthem with tears running down his cheeks at the end of the National Day Parade (NDP) has become an Internet sensation.
Mr Azuan Tan, 41, whose emotion was captured on video and broadcast live, told The Straits Times that the theme of this year's NDP, Stronger Together, Majulah, left him filled with emotion.
"I believed that the entire NDP was well-organized. Mr. Tan, a teacher at Bedok View Secondary School, remarked that the story was really moving and had a profound impact.
"I have a great deal of admiration for all those who helped during the Covid-19 outbreak, including nurses, physicians, frontline workers, and educators. This culminated in a moment of being overwhelmed.
"The emotional outburst was my heartfelt expression of gratitude to everyone."
Several social media users praised Mr. Tan's reaction, with others suggesting that he was truly crying because of the explosions or because he had to return to work the next day.
Local meme websites like Yeolo and SGAG were also eager to use the image.
Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, stated in a Facebook post that the photograph has become one of the most recognizable photos of this year's NDP.
"It has been a difficult two years and an emotional one for many of us," he remarked.
"We display our unity and Singaporean spirit by watching out for one another, even in our most vulnerable situations!"
Regarding the internet attention he got, Mr. Tan stated, "I truly didn't believe I deserved it. I am startled and amazed. The folks who worked tirelessly to organize the march deserve more attention than I do."
Mr. Sharael Taha, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, stated that Mr. Tan has volunteered in the community for five years.
"Since the epidemic, he has been providing food to poor families with great vigor. Additionally, he has distributed masks and care packages to families infected with the Covid-19 virus," he stated.
He is a dedicated volunteer who exemplifies community cohesion.
