PE Results What Time? Past Election Precedents

Updated: Sep 11, 2023

What time will the presidential results be released? Well, nobody knows, not even returning officer Tan Meng Dui himself. But let's look at past results for reference.

Presidential Elections 2011

[8pm] Polls closed and counting immediately began. For PE 2023, polls will also close at 8pm.

[1.19am] ELD announced a vote recount, as the top two candidates Tony Tan and Tan Cheng Bock had a margin of less than 2%. We can conclude that if the results were clearer, 1.19am would have been the time of results announcement.

[4.23am] Tony Tan's win was declared. We're also puzzled why the first count took more than 5 hours, whereas the subsequent count only took 3.

Unfortunately, there has only been one other contested presidential election to refer to, and we have no idea what time Ong Teng Cheong was declared president... so let's look at GE results for a pseudo-reference instead.

General Elections 2020

[10pm] Polls closed and vote counting began. On Polling Day, ELD announced an extension of voting hours from 8pm to 10pm because of long queues at polling stations throughout the day.

[1.22am] The first result was declared, Bukit Panjang SMC (PAP).

[3.44am] The last results came in, Aljunied GRC (WP) and Nee Soon GRC (PAP).

General Elections 2015

[8pm] Polls closed and vote counting began.

[11.31pm] The first result was declared, Sengkang West SMC (PAP).

[3.10am] The last result was declared, Aljunied GRC (WP).

So How?

In conclusion, the earliest we may expect a result might be 1am or later, if the results are clear. But if things get complicated, we could be looking at 4am again.

Will you be staying up late on Polling Day?

  • Next day Saturday mah, let's go!

  • Where got time? Sleep lah, sleep lah
