Andre Jumabhoy has been both a public prosecutor and a defender of drug traffickers. But for some reason all his high profile cases are losses. Is Pritam in trouble?
Background
In 2011, Andre Jumabhoy joined the Attorney General’s Chambers as a Deputy Public Prosecutor, where he prosecuted crimes such as murder and drug trafficking. He was promoted to Deputy Senior State Counsel in 2014.
He studied law in London, and worked as a lawyer there for 4 years, which may explain his angmoh accent:
Public Prosecutor
Jumabhoy most famously prosecuted the "sex for grades" trial in 2013, where law student Darinne Ko accused law professor Tey Tsun Huang of corruptly obtaining sex and gifts in exchange for improving her grades.
Tey submitted love notes proving that she was in love with him, and that he was not corrupt. Jumabhoy failed to secure a conviction, and Tey was acquitted.
Cannabis Advocate
2018: Jumabhoy defended cannabis trafficker Seet Poh Jing, saying that Seet "intended to use the drugs for research and development rather than trafficking." The prosecution countered that Seet's mobile phones were found to contain mass-sent messages advertising the drug.
2020: Jumabhoy defended Mohamed Rafi Mohamed Salleh, who helped buy cannabis for a friend, claiming that Rafi was remorseful. The prosecution countered that Rafi had planned the drug transaction, and further tried to conceal evidence by hiding his SIM card beneath the inner sole of his shoe.
Pritam How?
For some reason, this Andre is always on the losing side? As Public Prosector also fail to win, defending drug traffickers also fail to win. Best wishes to Pritam.
