The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) announced in a press release on Tuesday that Mr. Leong Mun Wai has been chosen as its new secretary-general (Apr 4).
This comes after its former secretary-general Francis Yuen, 73, resigned in March after serving in the job for two years.
Dr. Tan Cheng Bock, a former member of the governing People's Action Party, launched PSP in 2019. (PAP). Dr. Tan retains his position as party chairman in the newly announced Central Elective Committee (CEC) on Tuesday.
Ms. Hazel Poa will replace Mr. Wang Swee Chuang as vice-chairman of the PSP.
Mr. Leong, 64, and Ms. Poa, 52, are both Non-Constituency Members of Parliament at now.
Along with Dr. Tan, they were on the PSP's West Coast GRC ticket that lost the 2020 General Election to a PAP team led by current Minister for Transport S Iswaran.
Nonetheless, the PSP team received 48.31% of the vote, achieving the largest proportion of votes among losing opposition candidates.
Mr. Nadarajah Loganathan, Mr. Jeffrey Khoo, and Mr. Abas Kasmini are also members of the new CEC. Mr. Nadarajan is also the first assistant secretary-general of the party.
This time, Ms. Tan Chika, who was co-opted into the CEC in 2020 but was not elected in 2021, was also elected.
The next CEC will serve until March 2025 for a duration of two years.
Mr. Leong stated in a video broadcast to Facebook on Tuesday that Mr. Yuen had established a "solid foundation" for the PSP during his two years as its leader.
“Now that the baton has been passed to me, I strive to bring PSP to greater heights, and to realise a progressive, compassionate and inclusive Singapore.”
Mr. Leong and Ms. Poa gave up their party leadership positions as assistant secretary-general and vice-chairman in 2020 in order to focus on their parliamentary duties.
In response to questioning from CNA regarding the shift in strategy, a PSP spokesperson stated that Mr. Leong and Ms. Poa feel prepared to assume more duties inside the party following two years of experience as NCMPs.
The statement said that Mr. Leong will be assisted by two assistant secretaries-general: Dr. Ang Yong Guan and Mr. Loganathan.
When questioned about potential adjustments to the planned policies and political methods of the PSP, the spokeswoman stated that Mr. Leong will give a public speech on the subject at a later date.
