Relief teacher gets sacked for not stopping fight in school

After a fight broke out in her classroom, a substitute teacher at a secondary school in Singapore was fired for lack of "proactive behavior."

On October 3, Celine Chia, age 25, described her experience in an Instagram post.

The incident, which Chia described as "small," occurred between two Secondary 1 guys on September 21.

Chia informed Mothership that one of the boys had special needs and requires additional care.

She then reprimanded the lads and had the class chair report the event to their form teacher, despite being "shocked."

She added in an Instagram post, "The entire experience lasted less than five minutes, and the class returned to normal thereafter."

No pupils were injured during the event.

The following day, Chia received a phone call from "Ms A," the school's disciplinarian.

Ms. A notified Chia that the school administration chose to terminate Chia's contract after studying the CCTV footage and discussing with the principal.

Chia, who has worked at the school for one year, stated that the disciplinary mistress informed her it was because she acted "unprofessionally" and insufficiently during the event.

Ms. A said that based on the CCTV evidence, it appears Chia did nothing to halt the fight, since she stayed sitting throughout the conflict.

"Of course, CCTV was incapable of capturing sound," Chia wrote.

Ms. A was also cited as adding, "It's also difficult for the school to explain to the parents."
