S'pore and M'sia in talks again on high-speed railway

Anthony Loke Siew Fook stated that Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had urged him to explore the issue and that his ministry was open to solutions from the business sector.

He stated, "The prime minister has indicated that we are receptive to any private investment ideas. As a result, there has been no decision on the revival of the HSR [high-speed rail] project as of yet, but we are not abandoning it.

Maliki Osman, deputy foreign minister of Singapore, stated last month that his government was willing to examine any Malaysian proposal.

The 350-kilometer rail project was scheduled to be finished in 2026. The anticipated travel time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore will be reduced from 6.5 hours to 90 minutes.

The original cost estimate of $17.4 billion increased to $27.6 billion. The then-prime minister of Malaysia, Mahathir Mohamad, stated that the plan would risk bankrupting the nation.

As the project was finally canceled in January 2021, Malaysia compensated Singapore with $70 million.

The connection was to have been constructed by Aecom, CH2M, Mott MacDonald, and WSP, among others.
