S'pore will not bow to local or international pressure to get rid of capital punishment: Shanmugam

Singapore has executed nine convicted narcotics dealers this year alone. Two Malaysians are among them: Kalwant Singh and Nagaenthran Dharmalingam.

Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam revealed to The Star on Saturday (3 Sep) that 10 more Malaysians are presently on death row in Singapore.

According to him, these Malaysians facing the death penalty were primarily convicted of drug trafficking. They are presently awaiting word on whether or not they will be given clemency.

Mr. Shanmugam stated that Singapore will not bow to local or international pressure to abolish the death penalty.

Despite their criticism, the minister asserted that Singapore has achieved success despite ignoring their advice.

Drug traffickers, whether from Malaysia or elsewhere, are well aware of the repercussions of being apprehended and convicted in Singapore.

Some individuals purposefully smuggle drugs into the country in order to evade the obligatory death penalty.

Mr. Shanmugam stated, as published by The Star, that evidence demonstrates that drug traffickers intentionally import quantities below Singapore's death penalty threshold.
