SDP eyeing Sembawang GRC next election

Paul Tambyah, chairman of the opposition party, said on Tuesday that the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) intends to contest Sembawang GRC in the next general election.

SDP contested the district in 2006 and 2011.

Since last year, the SDP has been doing house visits, according to Professor Tambyah.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, Mr. Vikram Nair, Dr. Lim Wee Kiak, and Ms. Poh Li San now head the GRC as part of a People's Action Party team of five members. In the 2020 general election, the PAP beat the National Solidarity Party with 67.29 percent of the vote.

Prof Tambyah was speaking to reporters at the end of an SDP National Day tour of six constituencies, which concluded in Kampung Admiralty in Sembawang GRC.

PM Lee asserts that the PAP tries its utmost to field a diversified team in elections.

The other five seats visited by the party, including its secretary-general Chee Soon Juan, on Tuesday were those contested by the SDP in the last election.

SDP ran candidates in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, Bukit Panjang SMC, Yuhua SMC, Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, and Bukit Batok SMC in the 2020 general election.

The party failed to get any seats. It performed best in Bukit Batok SMC, where Dr. Chee received 45.2% of the vote, and Bukit Panjang SMC, where last-minute candidate Prof. Tambyah received 46.2% of the vote.

Singapore must have its next election by August 2025.
