Singapore plans to develop more appealing and flexible workplaces

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) showcased these and other proposals for Singapore's future development in a new public display.

As flexible work arrangements become more popular, their influence on office space demand and design remains unpredictable, according to the URA.

As the government examines the influence of flexible work arrangements on office space demand, new sites for commercial and office purposes with shorter leases of 15 to 30 years will be provided in the near future in certain areas.

This concept is being investigated in both the city center and areas closer to staff residences.

In addition to revitalizing the city center with the addition of mixed-use developments and increased recreation alternatives, the URA intends to do the same for regional centres as the nature of employment evolves.

It was said that while some businesses may choose to put their headquarters in the city center, they may be supported by regional centres where employees work closer to their homes.

For instance, Jurong Lake District is projected to be the largest commercial district outside of the city center, and its closeness to Tuas Port as well as industrial and research centers in the west region enables offices to be easily positioned near other businesses.
